Matthias Steiner Center Stage in 2009
Matthias Steiner - Germany's Olympic weightlifting gold medalist extraordinaire will on the main Expo stage at the 2009 Arnold Sports Festival, further proof that the Arnold draws some of the biggest names in the strength world.

Traditionally, the man who wins the gold medal in weightlifting's super heavyweight class at the Olympics is considered the World's Strongest Man - just as the man who wins the 100 meter dash is considered the World's Fastest Man. That hefty title and an Olympic gold medal are big news in of themselves, but exactly how Matthias Steiner reached the zenith of the lifting world is the best story of all.

Steiner was a promising Austrian weightlifter who felt that he was not getting the support he needed to reach the top of his sport and when he fell in love with a German woman, the pieces of the puzzle started to fall into place for him. In 2004, Steiner moved to Germany, got married and applied for German citizenship, which meant that for three years he was barred from international competition. In July 2007, Matthias Steiner suffered a tremendous personal loss when his wife was killed in a car accident.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger presents the Lifetime Achievement Award to Ben Weider at the 2008 Arnold Classic (Emery Photography, Columbus, Ohio)

Ben Weider, a cherished friend of the Arnold Classic, recipient of the 2008 Arnold Classic Lifetime Achievement Award, and the world recognized leader in the creation of the sport of bodybuilding will forever be revered.

Ben dedicated his life to the pursuit of excellence in fitness and sports. His legendary knowledge of publishing and Napoleonic history earned his international recognition and a 1984 nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger commented, "Ben Weider was one of the most amazing people I have ever known. He and his brother, Joe, grew up poor in Montreal, but through their vision, hard work, and determination, became founding fathers of bodybuilding and the worldwide fitness revolution. Ben and Joe were like fathers to me, bringing me to America when I was a young man just making my way in the world. I never would have achieved the success I have enjoyed in life without them and they supported me in everything I have ever done."

The Arnold Weightlifting Championships: The Greatest Show in Weightlifting! - by Dan Bell

Weightlifting came to the Arnold Fitness Weekend in 2003 as a new event, given a chance by Arnold Schwarzenegger and his partner, Jim Lorimer, to bring the spotlight back to an Olympic sport in decline in the U.S. Having begun his career as a weightlifter on the Austrian national team, Arnold still has a soft spot in his heart for his first iron-game love. Jim Lorimer, along with lifting and coaching legend Frazier Ferguson, organized and ran the 1970 World Weightlifting Championship here in Columbus, when Vasily Alexiev broke the 500 pound Clean & Jerk barrier. Arnold and Jim wanted to see U.S. weightlifting prosper again and wanted to create something special for the sport. [ more ]
